- BIO:
Joseph H. DENNIS was born 7 Sep 1827, in Morgan Co, KY.
Joseph married Susan CARR on 13 May 1851, in Harrison Co, KY.
Joseph served in the Union Army, Company D, 7th KY Cavalry. Fought and was captured at the first battle of Cynthiana, KY. Superior confederate forces under John H. MORGAN burned the railroad depot and some cars, and paroled the prisoners. Some where taken to Camp Chase (Columbus OH?) for exchange. This may have happened to Joseph.
Shot himself in the left hand while cleaning his Navy colt pistol. He was discharged in Jun of 1863 due to the severity of this wound. Applied for and was granted a disability pension.
Joseph was somewhat of a roamer, buying and selling property in Floyd, Harrison and Nicholas counities. At the time of his death he apparently had nothing as he was living with a son in Crayton, Nicholas Co, KY. His wife Susan continued to live there until her death in 1904. Believe this to be the residence of Samuel M. DENNIS. Later documents list him as the executor of her estate.
His description - 5' 10", dark hair and complextion, and hazel eyes.
1870 US Census - living Precinct 1, Nicholas Co. KY
1880 US Census - living Richland, Harrison Co. KY
